WHAT
IS THE FOURTH PLINTH? |
|
The
Fourth Plinth is in the north-west of Trafalgar
Square, in central London. Built in 1841, it was originally intended
for an equestrian statue but was empty for many years. It is now the
location for specially commissioned art works. |

| The Mayor of London’s
Fourth Plinth Programme includes an art commissioning scheme, public
events and work with schools, which all aim to encourage debate about
the role and value of art in the built environment. |
| In
2004 the programme invited artists to respond to the
historical framework and existing sculptures of Trafalgar Square in an
international competition to create new temporary artwork for the empty
fourth plinth. Marc Quinn’s 'Alison Lapper Pregnant' was
selected as
the first commission. The next work selected and currently on view is Thomas
Schütte’s
'Model for a Hotel'. |
| In 2007, a number of artists were asked to submit ideas
for the next commission. Models of the six shortlisted proposals were
seen in the Fourth Plinth exhibition at the National
Gallery in the Annenberg Court from 8 January – 30
March 2008. |
| Discussion and presentations on the Fourth
Plinth commissions within the broader context of art in the public
realm in London. The day was chaired by Sandy Nairne, Director of
the National Portrait Gallery and Chair of the Fourth Plinth
Commissioning Group. |
