Designing houses for a contemporary Ireland
A National Sculpture Factory event

a major conference exploring attitudes to domestic architecture, proposing a more creative future for the built environment
Date: 23, 24 & 25 May 2007

Location: Gresham Metropole Hotel, Cork
At a time when more than 20% of Ireland's economy is directly involved with changing cities and replacing fields with houses, the conference was seen as a major opportunity to debate the key issues affecting design, and influence those who can make a change
"Paradoxically, the house represents both the most basic need for shelter and the highly developed need for sophisticated self-expression. As such it reflects how we view ourselves, as well as mirroring our values, aspirations and dreams." Tara Byrne, Director, National Sculpture Factory

Speakers:Sean Griffiths (FAT), Wayne Hemingway MBE, Mary P. Corcoran, Hendrik W. van der Kamp, Minister Micheal Martin TD, Bik van der Pol, Mick McDonagh, Alan Mee, Shane O'Toole, Hugh Pearman, Emmett Scanlon, Richard Simmons, Dominic Stevens, Patrick Sheridan (Urban Splash), Apolonija Sustersic, Frank McDonald.
Chair: Gemma Tipton, independent architectural critic and writer
des/IRE explored the power of good design in adding commercial value; to create a better-built environment; to look at issues of taste, culture, history, sustainability, regulation and standardisation in building and models of best practice in Ireland and abroad.
The National Sculpture Factory chose to put the spotlight on housing as an area of architecture and development that is often ignored by cultural organisations and in particular amongst the larger-scale, more eye-catching civic buildings. The role of housing design in the creation of a better built environment and in boosting quality of life, while also driving the economy, was examined.
This two day forum was open to all interested parties: architects, commercial developers, artists and cultural practitioners, speculators, government, property developers, local authorities, legislators, estate agents and mortgage brokers.
